Facebook to introduce gambling ad opt-out option

Facebook has unveiled it will introduce an option to skip gaming-related advertisements across the UK. BGC has welcomed the news, although it is still unknown how efficient the option will be.
The British gaming authority members will see to it that Facebook ads target an audience of 25+ years. Some lotteries are to be exempt from the rule, targeting the 18+ audience.
The industry has already introduced positive changes, with at least 20% of their radio and TV ads containing safer gaming-related messages. It tries to reduce the exposure to harmful content as much as possible.
Facebook has allegedly taken steps to improve its online space, looking to gain trust from competent bodies. However, the company has already broken multiple promises to resolve numerous regulatory problems in the past.
According to the report released by Reset Australia, Facebook has not done enough in the last six months to prevent harmful content from reaching children.
Facebook platforms already contain a lot of social gaming content, and they have introduced predictive games and fantasy sports in September 2024.
The company cleaning up its act in the UK may be for ulterior motives rather than social responsibility. If it wants to enter the iGaming industry seriously, the enterprise will have to introduce major changes.
If unable to resolve issues it was supposed to clear years ago, the company won’t be entering the regulated gaming environment anytime soon.
Commenting on the new option launch, Michael Dugher, CEO at BGC, stated:
I welcome this move by Facebook, and I would urge all social media and search platforms to provide the ability for users to opt-out of viewing betting adverts. The regulated betting and gaming industry is determined to promote safer gambling, unlike the unsafe and growing online black market, which has none of the safeguards which are commonplace among BGC members.
The UK Betting and Gaming Council works to create a safer gaming culture, building public knowledge and confidence in the industry. Founded in 2019, the company represents more than 90% of all online casinos in the industry, putting the customer first.
It wants to ensure a more secure gaming experience and improve standards for everyone. The enterprise has developed numerous successful initiatives and campaigns to promote safer gaming.
